Shirley Anderson listens intently to volunteer Don Stiner as he relays a much too familiar story about one of the homeless men that she feeds every Friday night under the bridge. “ He’s a loner, he won’t tell anyone where his camp is,” Stiner says. “ He’s still sleeping over near the park with a knife in his hand.” Anderson shakes her head sadly in wonderment. “ You never know what will set them off, do you?” Anderson feeds and clothes the homeless every Friday night from her post down below the Higgins Bridge in Missoula, Mont. It is a heartfelt operation, run by Anderson and three volunteers, that the homeless have dubbed, “ the Raven Van.” Anderson combs the riverbanks alone after dark, lifting blankets off people, inviting them to come join her for, “ soup, sandwiches, and a kind word.”
